Acne management

Acne is far more than a cosmetic skin issue. It’s a debilitating condition that can wreak havoc on your self-esteem and quality of life. Fortunately, our dermatologic surgeons at The Roxbury Institute are highly skilled in the art and science of treating active acne, reducing inflammation and helping our patients achieve the clear and healthy skin they want.

The Roxbury approach to acne management

Acne is an extremely personal condition. Every individual has acne for unique reasons, and responds differently to various treatments. As your wellness and beauty team, our job is to identify what’s causing your problem skin – and exactly what will clear it up.

During your initial consultation, we will dedicate time gathering detailed information about your skin, which will help us in composing a treatment plan. In addition to learning more about when your acne emerges and seems to get worse, we will also ask you questions about your diet, stress levels and lifestyle. Once we have a better understanding of your unique situation, we will recommend highly tailored lifestyle changes and treatment options that we believe will address the underlying cause of your acne and may clear up your condition.

We will also have you return on a regular basis so we can evaluate your progress, check in with your skin and tweak your treatment plan as necessary. This personal, ongoing relationship gives us the best chance at clearing up your acne, restoring a healthy complexion and renewing your confidence.

What causes acne?

Identifying the underlying cause of your acne is key to successfully treating it. All acne develops when your sebaceous glands produce an excessive amount of oil, which clogs your pores and results in unsightly lesions. The sebaceous glands can kick into overdrive for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Genetic factors. Unfortunately, your genes play a large role in whether or not you’ll suffer from acne. The reality is that if one of your parents had acne, there’s a very strong chance you will, too.
  • Diet. For better or worse, what you eat influences your skin. While fresh fruits and vegetables can improve your complexion, other foods, such as dairy and carbohydrates, can trigger acne.
  • Stress. Your emotional health also has an impact on your complexion, with chronic stress being a known contributor to acne.
  • Hormones. Androgens are the hormones that cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. As such, a hormonal imbalance or hormonal changes during pregnancy may cause or worsen acne in some individuals.

Types of acne treatments

At The Roxbury Institute, we offer the most advanced acne treatments available to help our patients clear up their skin. During your initial consultation, we will review all of our treatment options with you, and help you make a decision that will have an optimal impact on your complexion.

  • Medications

There are a number of prescription medications that are extremely effective in clearing up acne, including Retin-A, hormonal treatments and Accutane. All of these medications come with their own set of risks and benefits, and we will carefully review them with you if we believe one of these options is in your best interest.

  • Professional dermatologic treatments

A very popular way to manage active acne for our Beverly Hills patients, our professional treatments include chemical peels, blue light therapy, photodynamic therapy and IPL photofacial – all of which are very effective in targeting inflammation and acne lesions.

  • A healthy skin care routine

Beautiful, healthy skin begins with what you do at home, every single morning and night. To clear up your active acne and prevent it from recurring, you need an at-home skin care routine that is designed with your unique complexion in mind. During your initial consultation, we’ll prescribe a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and treatments that you can use on a daily basis to keep your skin clear and healthy.
