Microneedling is most commonly performed on the face, but it can sometimes be done on other areas of the body as well. In some cases, the treatment is performed to remove stretch marks in places like the thighs and abdomen.
As we get older, our bodies go through numerous changes. For many of us, one of the most notable of these changes is our skin becoming wrinkled, loose, and significantly less vibrant than it once was. Fortunately, there are effective ways that you can stave off the symptoms of your skin aging. If you’d like to rejuvenate your skin with a minimally invasive procedure, microneedling could be exactly what you’re looking for.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure used to reduce signs of aging skin and improve the skin’s overall health and appearance. The treatment is often used to treat wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tones.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment in which very thin needles poke holes in the top layer of the skin. When the needles cause this minor injury, it encourages the skin to create new tissue that’s rich in collagen. Collagen is a very important protein that contributes to the health and appearance of the skin, but as we get older, we produce less of it.
When the new skin is produced with plenty of collagen and elastin, that skin becomes firm and smooth with an even tone. As a result, the skin in the treatment area looks significantly healthier and more youthful.
Benefits of Microneedling
For anyone interested in improving the health and appearance of their skin, microneedling can offer quite a few benefits:
- Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
- Improving skin elasticity
- Reducing scars
- Treating enlarged pores
- Creating a more even skin tone
- Reducing stretch marks
- Treating hyperpigmentation
- Long-lasting results
- Improved self-confidence
- More youthful-looking skin
Before you undergo microneedling treatment, the first step will be a consultation with one of our providers at The Roxbury Institute. During this meeting, your doctor will discuss the treatment with you and ask you about your goals for the procedure. You’ll be able to ask them any questions you have, and they’ll work with you to form a personalized treatment plan.
Microneedling is performed as an outpatient procedure, and it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to complete. First, your provider will numb the target area(s) with a topical anesthetic. Once the anesthetic has had time to work, the doctor will begin to move the microneedling tool evenly across the skin. As they run the tool over the area, tiny needles will puncture your skin, and you might feel a slight warmth or a scratching sensation. When the procedure is finished, you should be able to head home right away.
How Long Is the Recovery Time?
Most patients don’t require any recovery downtime after microneedling treatment. You may experience some redness and swelling for the first few days, and your doctor will provide you with guidelines to follow during the healing process. That said, you should be able to return to your normal routine immediately after the procedure.
Am I a Candidate for Microneedling?
If you’d like to improve the health and appearance of your skin, you could be a good candidate for microneedling. Ideal candidates for the treatment should meet these requirements:
- Be in generally good physical health
- Have realistic expectations
- Have a desire to reduce signs of aging skin
- Have skin issues you’d like treated, such as enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, or scarring
- Be free of active skin infections
You may start to notice skin improvements after your first microneedling treatment, but most patients require multiple sessions to see major results. Ideally, you should receive the treatment once every three to eight weeks for approximately three to six months. After that, you should only need the treatment once per year or so to maintain the effects.
